Homes for sale in Point Loma
Point Loma is the peninsula that closes San Diego Bay on the west. It has views that compete with La Jolla's at a noticeably lower price, a genuine nautical atmosphere — with working marinas and boatyards — and a central location many people underestimate.

Lifestyle
What it's like to live in Point Loma
It is one of the best-connected areas in the county: close to the airport, to Downtown and to the beaches of Ocean Beach. Life revolves around the water, but in a different way from La Jolla: here there are more boats than tourists.
Cabrillo National Monument, at the tip, offers one of the best panoramic views of the entire city.

Inventory with history
What people buy here
Mid-twentieth-century single-family homes, many of them remodeled, and condos with bay views. It is an area where it makes sense to look closely at the condition of the construction: much of the inventory is decades old.
- Mid-century when much of the housing was built
- Remodeled many homes have already been updated
- Bay views in condos and on the upper slopes

How the Point Loma market behaves
Point Loma is one of the areas we most like to recommend, for a specific reason: it offers the features of a premium area — water views, central location, coastal atmosphere — at a price that stays clearly below La Jolla or Coronado.
The market is less international and more local than La Jolla's, which usually translates into somewhat more reasonable negotiations. Inventory is varied: untouched mid-century homes, complete remodels and bay-view condos all coexist.
That variety is an opportunity if you know how to read it and a risk if you don't: the difference between a renovated house and one that needs a full rebuild may not be obvious in the photos.
Due diligence
What to check before buying in Point Loma
-
Aircraft noise.
It is the critical point of the area. Point Loma sits under the airport's approach paths, and the impact varies enormously from street to street. Visit the property during flight operations before deciding.
-
The real condition of the construction.
Much of the inventory is from the 1950s and 60s. Electrical, plumbing and foundation deserve a thorough inspection.
-
What kind of view it is.
Bay, ocean and marina views have different values, and some depend on vegetation that can grow.
-
Slope and access.
In the upper part there are streets with a steep grade; check the garage access.
-
If it's a condo, the building's reserves.

How much do I need to buy in Point Loma?
Point Loma has a budget nuance worth understanding: much of the inventory is mid-century, so on top of the purchase price you need a realistic reserve for work. A house that looks like a bargain next to La Jolla may need electrical, plumbing and windows. Buyers who budgeted for that from the start have made some of the best purchases we have seen here.
Is Point Loma for you?
Buyers who want coast and views without paying the La Jolla premium, and anyone who values being close to the airport and Downtown. A very good investment option because of its room for appreciation.
Compared with other areas
Versus La Jolla, you save significantly and gain centrality, in exchange for less prestige of address. Versus Coronado, you are better connected to the rest of the city, but the beach doesn't compare.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Point Loma
Do you hear the planes a lot in Point Loma?
It is the critical point of the area and it varies enormously from street to street: there are addresses where you barely notice it and others where overflights are frequent. There is no way to tell from the photos. Always visit the property during flight operations before making a decision.
Why is it cheaper than La Jolla if the views are similar?
Brand perception and buyer profile. La Jolla attracts international demand and has a recognizable address that commands a premium. Point Loma is more local. For anyone looking for the feature — a water view, a central location — and not the label, it is usually the best buy in the county.
How does Ocean Beach compare with the rest of Point Loma?
Ocean Beach has a character of its own, more bohemian and informal, with generally more accessible prices. It is a community with a lot of personality. Point Loma Heights or La Playa are considerably more residential and quiet.
